Privacy policy
Last updated: 23 June 2026
1080Alert is operated by Virgola (virgola.co.nz). This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, and your rights under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.
What we collect
When you subscribe to alerts, we collect:
- Email address — to send you notifications
- Location name and coordinates — to match you with nearby 1080 operations
We do not collect passwords, payment information, or create user accounts. We do not use cookies for tracking.
How we use your information
- To send a confirmation email when you subscribe (double opt-in)
- To send alert emails when 1080 operations are announced, commence, or complete near your location
- To manage your subscription (confirmation, unsubscribe)
We do not sell, share, or provide your personal information to any third party for marketing purposes.
Data source
Operation data is sourced from publicly available Department of Conservation (DOC) records via ArcGIS Online. Location geocoding uses the Nominatim service, operated by the OpenStreetMap Foundation. When you search for a location, your query is sent to Nominatim to resolve coordinates. Geocoding results are cached locally so repeated searches for the same location are not sent externally.
Email delivery
Emails are sent via Resend, a third-party email delivery service. Your email address is shared with Resend solely for the purpose of delivering your alert emails. Resend processes this data on our behalf and is not permitted to use it for any other purpose. We track delivery status (bounces, complaints) to maintain email deliverability and comply with anti-spam requirements.
Data retention
Your subscription data is retained while your subscription is active. When you unsubscribe, your personal data (email address and location) is deleted automatically within 30 days. Anonymised delivery records (bounce and complaint history) may be retained to maintain email deliverability.
Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of the personal information we hold about you
- Correction — ask us to correct any inaccurate information
We also offer deletion of your data on request, and automatic deletion on unsubscribe (see above).
To exercise any of these rights, or to make a complaint, contact Virgola at [email protected]. You may also contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner if you are not satisfied with our response.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date.
