How to find out about 1080 drops near you

Finding reliable, up-to-date information about 1080 operations near a specific location has historically been harder than it should be. Here is what is available and how to use it.

1080Alert

1080Alert is a free service that lets you search for current and upcoming 1080 operations by location and subscribe to email alerts when operations are announced, begin, or complete near you. It pulls data directly from DOC's ArcGIS database — the same source DOC uses internally — and notifies you when status changes.

It is the most direct way to stay informed without manually checking multiple sources.

Search for operations near you

DOC's website

DOC publishes a list of current and planned operations at doc.govt.nz. The page is updated periodically but is not real-time, and finding operations near a specific address requires reading through a text list rather than searching by location. It is useful for background information on specific operations but not practical for regular monitoring.

Regional councils

Regional councils conduct their own 1080 operations, primarily targeting possums for TB control on farmland. These operations are not always listed on DOC's national page. Contact your regional council directly or check their website for pest control notices in your area.

On-the-ground signage

DOC and contractors are required to post warning signs at track and road entrances to operational areas before a drop. If you are physically in or near an area, signage is legally required. However, this is not useful for planning in advance.

The most practical approach

Set up a 1080Alert for your home address, your farm, your favourite hunting area, or any location you visit regularly. You will receive an email when an operation is announced, when it moves to active status, and when it is completed — so you always know the current situation without having to check.
